Arsenal v Atletico Madrid preview: 'My target is to play in Europe again', insists Arsene Wenger

Speaking ahead of Thursday's Europa League semifinal ahead of Atletico Madrid, Wenger downplayed the suggestion that emotions could get to him as he walks out on the Emirates pitch for his final European home game.

Nainggolan has 6 goals in 30 appearances for Belgium, and is valued at around £45m and the midfielder is said to be highly rated by one of the favourites to replace Arsene Wenger, Luis Enrique, the former Barcelona boss.

The former Gunners midfielder is now in charge of New York City and has led them to the top of the Eastern Conference in MLS after their best ever start to a season.

Sometimes I prefer to take the hardest path.

But in a statement released by the club later on Wednesday, the 68-year-old clarified that he had no problem with the timing.

If he respects me even 50 per cent of what I respect him we can even be friends in the future.

A report by Chris Wheatley for Goal suggested Wenger is looking for an "immediate return" to football, although at this time it is unclear which, if any, big clubs would be willing to consider the Frenchman.

With Wenger's long association with Arsenal coming to a close in a matter of weeks, he does not know how long he will spend away from the game before being ready for a fresh challenge.

"When you look at it, the way it's been the last few years, [there has been] a lot of frustration from the supporters, particularly with their league form".

Mohamed Elneny is set to miss the rest of the season after sustaining an ankle injury, while Jack Wilshere and Sead Kolasinac are doubtful with knocks and Mesut Ozil could miss out due to illness.

Atletico Madrid will provide the toughest of tests, and Diego Simeone's side are a well-known tough nut to crack.

"Both clubs want to play the final".

"They need to make the right decision, even if you have to be bold", Wenger said.

"He will have no shortage of offers", according to David Dean, Arsenal's former vice-chairman who appointed Wenger in 1996. But there are many players who had qualities. I do understand that fans can get frustrated but they forget about yesterday.
