Russia: US strikes remove moral hurdles for S-300 missiles for Assad - RIA

Lavrov's reply was published on the Russian Foreign Ministry's website. A new round of United States sanctions against Russian Federation and the US-led missile strikes on Syria added uncertainty to the possible Putin-Trump meeting.

Lavrov also revealed that Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin discussed the possibility of visiting each other's country when the USA president rang up Russian counterpart last month to congratulate him on his re-election.

Syrian forces used Soviet-era air defense systems and fired 112 surface-to-air missiles to repel the USA -led strikes, destroying 71 out of the 103 missiles launched by the Western coalition last week, according to the Russian Defense Ministry.

President of Russia Vladimir Putin is ready to meet with USA leader Donald Trump, Foreign Minister of Russia Sergey Lavrov told RIA Novosti. "We know what Russian President Vladimir Putin said".

"I can not say that this question has been settled", Lavrov said.

Moscow's hopes for better ties with Washington under Trump have withered amid the ongoing investigations into the alleged collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation. "Now that this outrageous act of aggression was undertaken by the US, France and United Kingdom, we might think how to make sure that the Syrian state is protected". The American military airstrikes were in response to a suspected chemical gas attack on the district of Douma.

Surface-to-air missiles were seen in the sky over Syria's capital Damascus on April 14, 2018, as the Syrian air defenses were responding to the US -led missile attack on Syria.

Earlier, in an interview with the BBC, Lavrov said that Moscow was ready to consider any means to help the Syrian army curb further aggression even though "several years ago we [Russia] decided not to supply S-300 systems to Syria at our partners' request".

"What decisions will be taken by the leadership of Russian Federation together with the representatives of Syria have yet to be determined; there is no secret here", Lavrov said.

"The missile strike badly worsened the atmosphere around Syria and the Syrian peace process", Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on a conference call on Monday when asked about the possible S-300 delivery. He said: "I am 100% sure that the military will not allow this to happen and neither President Putin nor President Trump will allow this to happen".
