Donald Trump cancels first trip to Latin America 'to deal with Syria crisis'

President Donald Trump will skip a summit in Latin America this week to oversee the USA response to a suspected chemical attack in Syria after he threatened military action, the White House confirmed Tuesday.

The planned South America trip was meant to see Trump attend the Summit of the Americas in Lima, the capital city of Peru.

In addition to managing the potential USA response to last weekend's attack in Syria, Trump has been monitoring what he fears may be a migrant crisis at the US border with Mexico.

Peru's global relations expert Miguel Rodriguez Mackay said Trump, who was expected to make his first visit to the region as US president, has once again made his "contempt" for Latin America clear. "It was awful", Trump said at the start of a Cabinet meeting that was one of several White House gatherings Monday where possible military action was discussed.

The statement came after a report suggested that Beijing was pushing the proposal, sparking concern in Australia and New Zealand. Fairfax reported there had been informal discussions between China and Vanuatu, but no formal offer, about a military buildup.

The change comes amid a tumultuous week for the White House - an Federal Bureau of Investigation raid Monday targeted the Manhattan office and hotel room of Michael Cohen, the president's personal lawyer.

"We can't let atrocities like we all witnessed ... we can't let that happen", he told reporters.

"I'm going to bet you he holds his regular schedule today", Kudlow said. The trip had been expected to be tense and awkward because of Trump's repeated disparagement of the region over immigration, narcotics and trade. Pence will travel to the summit in his place, but will not go to Colombia.

CNBC also spoke to Sergio Montenegro, who works in Lima, and he compared Trump with some populist leaders who came to power in Latin America.

The region has gotten little mention from Trump's White House except as a source of migrants, drugs and gang violence that the president blames Mexico and other neighbors for failing to stem.
