NY Trump Tower Fire On 50th Floor Out, One Injured – President Safe In DC

The man killed in a blaze at New York City's Trump Tower was an art collector who spent time with Andy Warhol, but fell on hard financial times in recent years and went through bankruptcy proceedings.

Four firefighters were injured while putting out the fire, but their injuries were not life-threatening.

The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) tweeted that the fire at Trump Tower had been upgraded to a Category 4 alarm fire from a Category 3 fire alarm. That one was characterized as an electrical fire, and was mostly confined to the building's roof. Firemen (and women) did a great job.

Six firefighters were also injured in the blaze.

The FDNY tweeted just before 8 p.m. ET the fire was "under control".

Nigro said the fire broke out at around 5:30 p.m. Fire engines and ladders were there within five minutes.

The cause of the fire is unclear. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition but later died, said spokeswoman Angelica Conroy of the Fire Department. "New York City did not mandate sprinklers in every unit and common hallways of new residential buildings until March 1999 when then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani signed council legislation". He lived on the 50th floor of the 58-story building.

"The rest of the building had a considerable amount of smoke". There were no members of first family in residence. Nigro agreed at the press conference that it's a "well-built building". Nigro said no member of the Trump family was in the building Saturday. "The upper floors, the residence floors, are not sprinklered".

Almost two decades ago, Trump, then one of the Big Apple's most prominent real estate moguls, lobbied against Mayor Rudy Giuliani-era legislation that considered whether sprinklers should be installed in all residential buildings after two fatal fires in Brooklyn and Manhattan.

About 200 firefighters and emergency medical service workers responded to the fire, Nigro said.
