A PMI reading of 50 and above indicates expansion, while a reading below 50 indicates contraction.

Chinese manufacturing companies signalled only a marginal improvement in overall operating conditions at the end of the first quarter.

"The sentiment of growth in the manufacturing sector is usually reflected by the industrial production in the country", he told The Edge Financial Daily when contacted.

Production levels continued to grow in March, although the rate of increase was the slowest in five months.
