At least 5 Palestinians shot dead by Israeli troops as thousands march on Gaza-Israel border for 'March of Return'

Thousands in Gaza marched through the streets at funerals for those killed.

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for an independent, transparent investigation and appealed "to those concerned to refrain from any act that could lead to further casualties and in particular any measures that could place civilians in harm's way", his spokesman said in a statement.

Israel's military targeted three Hamas sites in the Gaza Strip with tank fire and an air strike after what it said was an attempted shooting attack against soldiers along the border that caused no injuries.

The Palestinian Health Ministry said Israeli forces fired live bullets, rubber-coated steel pellets and tear gas.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas declared Saturday would be a national day of mourning.

Land Day is seen by Palestinians as a continuation of an ethnic cleansing campaign carried out by Zionist armed groups in 1948, when more than 750,000 Palestinians were driven off their lands in an event known to Arabs as the Nakba, or "catastrophe". Palestinians demand the right of return to their homes and villages which they say to have been expelled from in 1948.

Meanwhile, Egypt's foreign ministry condemned on Friday night the use of "excessive violence" by Israeli occupation forces against Palestinian protesters gathered at the Gaza border with Israel on Friday to commemorate Land Day.

Protest organisers said mass marches would continue until May 15, the 70th anniversary of Israel's creation.

Friday's clashes were the deadliest in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict since the 2014 Gaza War. "If this continues we will not have no choice but to respond inside the Gaza Strip", Manelis told reporters in a phone briefing.

Palestinian rights group Adalah said the Israeli army on Saturday "accidentally" took responsibility for the attacks on Palestinian protesters, before deleting the post from their official Twitter page. It comes a day after the planned move of the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv, a step that has provoked worldwide criticism and Palestinian anger.

Israel would also have asked inhabitants with a weapons license, from towns near Gaza Strip, to behave at all times, given possibility of a Palestinian being able to infiltrate its territory, according to several Israeli media.

The protests come amid growing tensions over President Donald Trump's December recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, as well as a yet-to-be-released US peace plan that Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has already pledged to reject.

Palestinians "expect the security council to shoulder its responsibility" and "defuse this volatile situation, which clearly constitutes a threat to global security", Mansour said.

In a written statement before the meeting, Israel's ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, blamed Hamas for the violence.

The clashes are happening amid a number of holy days: Passover begins at sundown on Friday, which is also Good Friday for Christians; Easter for Western Christian churches is this Sunday; and Orthodox Easter is next Sunday.

Videos from the march, which was organized as a peaceful protest by activists and grassroots organizations in Gaza and later supported by local Hamas officials, show civilians being shot down by Israeli snipers who were stationed tens of meters away from the protesters, on the other side of a highly militarized fence.

Israeli Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman said in a tweet directed to Gazans in both Hebrew and Arabic that "Hamas's leadership is playing with your life".
