Initial Egypt Election Results Show Landslide Win for Incumbent Sissi

Sisi supporters revel as Egypt election gets underway

Turnout low as Egyptians wrap up presidential vote

After the arrest of some other serious candidates, who were either arrested or intimidated, Sisi's expectations to win a second four-year term increased.

According to the privately owned al-Masry al-Youm newspaper, el-Sissi has received more than 1.2 million votes so far in the city of Alexandria, while his challenger received less than 40,000.

At the last election in 2014, turnout was 47 per cent, although el-Sisi won 97 per cent of the overall vote.

Imam affirmed that since the beginning of the first day of the election, general coverage has been positive with the exception of some articles by writers in worldwide media outlets that are not accredited with the Egyptian Center for Foreign Correspondents.

In a state TV interview ahead of the election, Sisi urged all eligible voters to take part in the polls regardless of whom they would vote for, expressing his wish to have had more challengers in the bid.

Kelly also reportedly said what we already figured out: that there wouldn't be a wall "that Mexico will pay for". It sounds unlikely that the president will make any real progress on his border wall during his current term.

The government has hoped for high turnout to lend the election legitimacy, and has staggered the voting over three days.

Polling stations in Egypt closed Wednesday at 10 p.m. local time (0800 GMT), bringing an end to the three-day presidential elections which kicked off on Monday.

"The voice of the Egyptian masses will undoubtedly bear witness to the fact that our nation's will imposes itself with a force that knows no weakness", he posted on Twitter.

Voters cast their ballots at some 13,706 polling stations nationwide, with about 18,000 judges overseeing the voting process that is also monitored by at least 53 local organizations and nine global ones, besides more than 680 foreign reporters.

Other tactics have also been deployed, with some voters saying they were paid and given other incentives to cast their ballots.

Sisi won his first term in 2014, a year after the former army chief ousted his predecessor Mohamed Morsi following mass protests against him.

After warning people who do not vote they would be fined 500 Egyptian pounds ($30), the election commission extended voting by an hour.

At some polling stations, voters were granted free meals.

"But I know the huge popularity of President Sisi", he said.
