Boko Haram returns Nigerian kidnapped schoolgirls, witness says

"The girls said Boko Haram dropped them about 20 kilometers into Dapchi town and told them to find their way", he said. They need the support of their families and communities to feel safe and return to school.

The mass kidnapping brought back painful memories of the 2014 Boko Haram abduction of almost 300 girls from a separate school in Chibok, 170 miles southeast of Dapchi.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Yakubu Dogara, on Wednesday, commended President Muhammadu Buhari over the release of the abducted Dapchi school girls in Yobe.

"If the immediate-past (Goodluck Jonathan) Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) administration had responded with the similar alacrity, the Chibok schoolgirls would have been released or rescued".

Mohammed said in a statement today that "the government had a clear understanding that violence and confrontation would not be the way out as it could endanger the lives of the girls, hence a non-violent approach was the preferred option".

Witnesses have reported the terrorist group to have entered Dapchi, storming with nine cars and releasing the kidnapped girls in the center of town.

There were no immediate details from the government or from Boko Haram on why the girls were taken.

"Boko Haram shook hands with the parents and apologised for abducting them", Mdada said.

Wakil, popularly called "Mama Boko Haram", who appeared highly elated, told NAN that she received the news of the release of the girls with "great joy".

"They didn't harm us", Grema added.

Members of Boko Haram drove into Dapchi on Wednesday and dropped off at least 76 of the abducted schoolgirls that they kidnapped last month.

In 2014, Boko Haram kidnapped 276 girls, which caused worldwide outrage and ignited the #BringBackOurGirls campaign. "But what I have been told is that 91 girls and one boy have been documented".

The speaker said intelligence gathering must be strengthened to prevent attacks before they occur.

"When I get there we will do a head count to see if all of them have been released", said Bashir Manzo, whose 16-year-old daughter was among those kidnapped during the February 19 attack. It was the biggest mass abduction since the militant group took away more than 250 girls from Chibok town in 2014.
