Congresswoman Louise Slaughter Dies at 88 After Suffering a Concussion

She kept that position even after Cuomo was elected lieutenant governor in 1979.

Potential successors include Lovely Warren, 40, the first black female mayor of Rochester whom New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo (D) once nearly selected as his lieutenant governor.

Slaughter was the first woman to chair the powerful House Committee on Rules and served as the Ranking Democrat in the 115th Congress, often exchanging friendly banter with Chairman Pete Sessions - a rival on the committee for 20 years.

Slaughter also served as the dean of the NY congressional delegation, serving her 16th term in Congress.

At the end of February, Slaughter launched her reelection campaign for a 17th term in office. She was the oldest member in the House. "The Congressional community has lost a beloved leader and a cherished friend".

The Environmental Protection Agency deployed an on-site co-ordinator to help monitor air emissions, spokesman David Gray said. The agency is responsible for investigating major chemical fires, explosions, leaks, and other accidents.

"Louise never forgot her roots as the daughter of a Kentucky blacksmith", Pelosi said.

Slaughter received her Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology and a Master of Science degree in Public Health from the University of Kentucky.

The former chair of the Rules Committee - and the oldest member of the House - suffered a head injury after a fall, her office said.

"In her lifetime of public service and unwavering commitment to working families, Congresswoman Slaughter embodied the very best of the American spirit.", House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said in a statement.

"She made everybody believe that if you are a breathing human being, no matter where you come from, who you love, what color you are, you were important", said Rochester Chapter's National Organization for Women President, Jaclyn Richard. Her passing will leave a gaping hole in our hearts and our nation. She also worked on legislation to ensure women and minorities were included in federal health trials.

She also was the author of other pieces of landmark pieces of legislation in Congress, including one that barred members of Congress from insider trading, and was the co-author of the Violence Against Women Act. Congresswoman Slaughter was a scientist, a legislator, and a steadfast supporter of the Deaf community in Rochester and throughout the country. She and her husband Bob Slaughter moved to NY after she completed graduate school.

"She was a champion for multiple legislative efforts and advocated for our work and Planned Parenthood at every turn". In her honor, RIT renamed the building Louise Slaughter Hall in 2001. "Louise was a trailblazer".

Grant reportedly failed his physical and the Ravens were quick to schedule Crabtree for a visit after learning of his release. In five career games against the Ravens , Crabtree has 33 catches for 444 yards and six touchdowns.

"She was trailblazer, a partner and friend ever since we worked together for my father more than four decades ago", the younger Cuomo said in a statement, calling her a "champion for NY".

"It was a female uprising", she said in 2014.
