Mexico and the United States have shelved tentative plans for a visit to Washington by President Enrique Pena Nieto as tensions persist over a proposed border wall, U.S. media reported Saturday.

The fight was reportedly over Trump's refusal to publicly affirm Mexico's position on a border wall.

As a result of the impasse, both countries later agreed that getting the leaders together at the White House wasn't a good idea.

Administration officials other than Trump have admitted several times that USA taxpayers will have to pay for construction of any additional border barriers.

The US statement said Trump reiterated a commitment to expanding ties on security, trade and immigration, but the statement made no mention of the wall or Pena Nieto's visit.

Pena Nieto had already cancelled a visit in January previous year because of US President Donald Trump's insistence that Mexico pay for the wall, which he wants as part of his efforts to curb immigration.

They later met at G20 meetings in Hamburg in July.

Pena Nieto's visit had been considered for February or March, the Post said, but the Mexican leader wanted to avoid public embarrassment.

Pena Nieto's party faces a tough fight hanging onto the presidency, with his chosen candidate, former Finance Minister Jose Antonio Meade, running third in most polls.

During an almost-hour-long phone conversation on Tuesday, Peña Nieto and Trump spent a significant portion on the wall, and Trump's adherence to his unpopular promise brought the talks to a hasty close when the United States president quickly ended the call, according to officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the subject matter.

Trump's refusal to back down to Mexico on the border wall has been ongoing during his time as president.
