New Horizons Snaps Farthest Image Ever Taken From Earth

NASA probe “New Horizons” snaps farthest-ever photo from Earth

NASA released incredible images of dwarf planets

That's because they were taken from the farthest point from planet Earth of any images ever captured, snapped by a spacecraft just over 3.79 billion miles (6.12 billion kilometers) from its home planet. In preparation for these, the probe also established new records when it used its Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) to take a series of long-distance pictures. This image is, for now, one of the farthest pictures from Earth ever captured by a spacecraft.

The last time they did this was 5 December, when New Horizons took a routine calibration image of a cluster of stars, breaking a record for the most distant photograph ever taken. So, after exploring Pluto in 2015, New Horizons, started on its secondary mission to explore 2014 MU69, a Kuiper Belt Object (KBO), which it should reach in 2019. It finished its primary mission with the Pluto flyby in 2015 and is now on an extended mission to explore the Kuiper Belt, helping the USA to complete its reconnaissance of our solar system.

Voyager 1's cameras were turned off shortly after that portrait, leaving its distance record unchallenged for more than 27 years.

NASA has a whole lot of fancy image-gathering hardware on Earth and in space, and we've seen countless of stunning snapshots taken from here on Earth as well as nearby planets like Mars, Jupiter and Saturn.

"New Horizons has always been a mission of firsts - first to explore Pluto, first to explore the Kuiper Belt, fastest spacecraft ever launched". "It is possible for the cameras to be turned on, but it is not a priority for Voyager's Interstellar Mission", according to NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory's website.

NASA's New Horizons spacecraft has broken the record for an image taken at the farthest distance from Earth in history.

To date, New Horizons is the fifth spacecraft to venture beyond the outer planets.

And, just hours later, it beat its own record.

New Horizons has observed several objects in the Kuiper Belt, a distant region of icy debris that extends far beyond the orbit of Neptune. In the process, it sent back of the distant world, which for decades had appeared as little more than a smudge to even the most advanced telescopes on Earth.

Team USA Starts Olympic Men's Hockey Tournament With Overtime Loss To Slovenia
Both Team USA and Canada are unbeaten in the group stage so far, so somebody will leave the game with their first loss. For 40 minutes things went swimmingly for the star-less US men's hockey team in its Olympic opener against Slovenia .

For now, though, New Horizons is now enjoying some well-deserved hibernation as it hurtles away from us at a rate of roughly 700,000 miles a day.
