Giants denied permission to interview Vikings' Stefanski

Vikings could promote Kevin Stefanski to OC, play keep-away with Giants' top target

Giants can zero in on Kevin Stefanski after Vikings hire John DeFilippo

Pat Shurmur the new Giants head coach, worked side by side with Stefanski in Minnesota and the thought was that he was the leader to take the OC job in NY. That came a day after the Vikings' season ended with a thud in a 38-7 loss in Philadelphia.

Minnesota, though, is not releasing Stefanski from his coaching contract to pursue the opportunity in NY unless it is able to hire Philadelphia quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo away from the Eagles to replace Shurmur.

ESPN's Adam Schefter first reported Thursday that DeFilippo would take over the role vacated by Pat Shurmur.

Stefanski, 35, would've had play-calling duties as the Vikings offensive coordinator.

Now head coach Pat Shurmur, who will call his own plays running his own offense with the Giants, no doubt has other candidates in mind. While Bevell and Shurmur haven't coached together in the National Football League, they both have coached under renowned offensive mind Brad Childress, 61, who recently retired from Reid's Chiefs staff after a 19-year coaching run. "He's done an outstanding job this year and I do believe he's earned the right [to be a head coach]". This included monitoring the weather during training camp to inform Childress whether it was safe to practice or if an approaching storm might be reason to move inside. It is possible Stefanski could be asked to do both jobs if hired.

Stefanski joined the Vikings in 2006 and is the longest tenured coach on the staff, having coached tight ends, running backs and finally quarterbacks under Shurmur's watch in 2017.

The Vikings' decision to block Stefanski from joining Shurmur means the team clearly thinks highly of him. That's debatable and would seem unlikely, considering the Eagles refused to let DeFilippo interview with the New York Jets for their offensive coordinator job past year. However, the NFL's Anti-Tampering Policy divides coaches into only two tiers: head coach and all assistant coaches. The same thing should go for a position coach who has the chance to become a coordinator. I think what's really good about Kevin, he's a communicator - so he communicates with me, we communicate to the quarterbacks and try to stay on the same page with them and Coach (Mike) Zimmer and what we're all thinking, and he's very organized. In those three games, including a 38-7 victory over the Vikings in the NFC championship game, Foles threw for 971 yards, six touchdowns and only one interception for a 115.7 passer rating.
