UN, US slam Kenya after TV stations shuttered

The government through the Communications Authority of Kenya shut down KTN, NTV and Citizen stations on Tuesday over broadcasting symbolic swearing-in of opposition leader Raila Odinga as the people's president.

Omtata argues that the state switched off free to air transmission on the three channels without warning and without giving any reasons.

A United Nations spokesperson says Kenya must follow a court order lifting the suspension of three television stations.

"We are deeply concerned by the Government's action to shutdown, intimidate and restrict the media".

The government's attempted censorship made global headlines about a country that is valued by investors for its stability, relative freedom and steady economic growth. Matiangi claimed that the media's complicity in the mock inauguration would have led to the deaths of thousands of Kenyans.

On Wednesday, the Kenyan government had said the TV stations would stay off air indefinitely.

Security operatives in Kenya have arrested opposition member Miguna Miguna for playing a key role in the mock inauguration of Raila Odinga which was described by the government as a "well-choreographed attempt to subvert or overthrow" it.

Kenya's media shutdown has come to an end.

The opposition claimed the election process was rigged and the result illegitimate.

Also on Wednesday, police arrested opposition lawmaker Tom Kajwang for illegally administering Odinga's "oath".

The opposition leader accused the government of suspending the constitution by attacking the media, and batted away suggestions his staged inauguration was a bid to seize power. The Supreme Court nullified the August election over irregularities - the first time a court had overturned a presidential election in Africa - and ordered a fresh vote in October that the opposition leader boycotted.
