Trump Signs Executive Order to Keep Guantanamo Bay Detention Center Open: White House

The Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR), the New York-based advocacy organization, issued a statement, criticizing the decision of US President Donald Trump to keep the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba open.

"In the past, we have foolishly released hundreds of unsafe terrorists, only to meet them again on the battlefield", Trump said.

Just before the 2018 State of the Union address, President Donald Trump issued an executive order aimed at continuing the operation of the U.S. military's prison facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. But we must be clear: terrorists are not merely criminals, they are unlawful enemy combatants.

The executive order authorized the US military to add detainees and suggested the possibility that captured Islamic State militants could be sent there for the first time.

"And when captured overseas, they should be treated like the terrorists they are", Mr Trump said during Tuesday's speech.

The move reverses an Obama-era executive order to shutter the controversial prison - a goal that the former president was not able to achieve before leaving office in 2017.

While hundreds of detainees have been transferred from the facility, 41 detainees now remain.

The order also said that U.S. detention operations at Guantanamo Bay are safe, legal, humane and consistent with global law.

Since Ecuador lacks major drug crops, authorities there fight against gangs that store narcotics. Some 37 homes were destroyed, according to the Interior Ministry.

The order says the USA may transport additional detainees to the detention center in Cuba, when necessary to protect the nation.

The office of the Director of National Intelligence said in its most recent report on the subject that about 17% of the 728 detainees released from Guantanamo are "confirmed" and 12% are "suspected" of re-engaging in militant activities. One of the most infamous detainees is 9/11 alleged mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who has been held at Guantanamo Bay since 2006.

European allies, Muslim leaders and other critics have been vehemently opposed to how detainees have been held at Guantanamo for decades without charge.

"We're gonna load it up with some bad dudes, believe me, we're gonna load it up", Trump said in the campaign trail.
