You'll be able to listen to the Google audiobooks (and pick up where you left off) through Google Home smart speakers, Android and iOS phones, Chromecast, Android Wear devices, Android Auto in your vehicle or on a laptop.

Today, Google announced that it is launching audiobooks on Google Play in 45 countries and nine languages. As of now, the Google Assistant integration with audiobooks is available on Android smartphones and smart speakers globally in English.

With the new Google audiobooks, you can purchase single titles on Google Play without a subscription, something that you now cannot do on the uber popular Audible. Audiobooks are generally priced between $7 and $15 but Google is offering discounts, in addition to 50 per cent off on your first audiobook, reports said.

Meanwhile, Audible is already a well-established player in the audiobooks space, with over 400,000 audio titles.

In light of Amazon Echo's existing audiobook integration, Google's recent announcement is set to increase its competitiveness against its rival's ever-growing network of Alexa supported devices. Plus, you can share them with everyone in your family (well, maybe not that Fifty Shades you just got around to reading) thanks to Family Library.

Google's push into audiobooks through Google Play is understandable given the prior void it had in offering such content.

Audible offers one-off purchases, but promotes a $14.95 monthly subscription that includes one free download and 30% off further purchases.

You can start listening to a new title for under $10. You can do that with Audible books as well, though Audible (which is owned by Amazon) is pretty aggressive at pushing customers to sign up for a full subscription.
