A bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra also restrained any other state from issuing such notifications and orders prohibiting exhibition of the movie.

The fresh update is that the two states Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh petitioned the Supreme Court for a review on its order on the nationwide release of Padmaavat.

Despite the order of SC, protesters have not backed down especially in Rajasthan and Gujarat. The top court, however, preserved that the states were under a constitutional duty to maintain law and order.

The film has been marred into controversy after several fringe groups, mostly Shri Rajput Karni Sena, accused the film maker of distorting history and portraying Rani Padmini in poor light in the movie.

Senior advocate Harish Salve, appearing for Viacom 18 - the producers of the film starring Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor in leading roles, opposed an urgent hearing.

He said the organisation had called for a shutdown across the country on January 25 to protest against the film's screening. On Sunday, thousands of women brandishing swords took out a "Chetavani Rally" (warning march) in Rajasthan's Chittorgarh town, demanding a ban on the film and threatening to do self-immolation (jauhar) if the authorities fail to stop its release.

The organization also warned theater owners not to screen the movie.

The film tells the story of a 14th Century Hindu queen belonging to the high Rajput caste and the Muslim ruler Alauddin Khilji.

Earlier the film was slated to release on Dec 1, 2017.

Padmaavat's release and its certification were delayed and stalled due to repeated protests and threats of violence by Rajput groups led by the Rajput Karni Sena.

Earlier this month, the film censor board cleared Padmaavat for release subject to five changes.
