Police described the suspected bomber as a white, middle-aged man with a stocky build and was wearing a gray shirt and a gray hat.

PC Schulze said that it wasn't known whether the man was involved but that investigators considered him a person of interest.

Police have not determined the motive of the suspect (s) involved in the incident.

The fire department raced to the scene and found the smoke coming from a service corridor, CBS affiliate WTSP-TV, Tampa Bay-Sarasota reported.

Damage was fairly minimal, but smoke from the explosion set off fire alarms. No other explosives were found in the backpack that was in the corridor. Officials initially reported that the backpack contained possible improvised explosive devices in it, the Federal Bureau of Investigation confirmed it did not have explosive devices inside. The entire mall was evacuated; about 100 people were inside the shopping center at the time.
