Los Angeles Makes Amazon's Shortlist For HQ2

As you may have heard, Amazon has narrowed its list of potential HQ2 sites.

The list was pared down from 238 community proposals and Amazon said it expects to make a final decision later this year.

The other contenders: Denver, Washington D.C., Montgomery County, Maryland; Nashville, Tennessee; Newark, New Jersey; Northern Virginia; and Raleigh, North Carolina.

Los Angeles was the only West Coast city selected.

On Thursday morning, Amazon unveiled the top 20 contenders to become the company's second home.

The online retailing giant solicited city bids for its next headquarters previous year, receiving 238 replies. "Getting from 238 to 20 was very tough - all the proposals showed tremendous enthusiasm and creativity. We are proud of the investments and partnerships we've made that enhance our many attributes, such as our world-class university system, well-trained workforce, diverse economy, strong infrastructure and emerging entrepreneurial spirit".

Site-selection experts and economists projected the odds of the Triad winning HQ2 as very slim.

Although that criteria appeared to make the joint Triad pitch the longest of long shots, local economic developers emphasized that you can't hit a home run without taking a swing.

Mayor Mike Savage said Thursday he was not surprised Halifax is not on the short list of cities being considered for a second Amazon headquarters.

"So whether it's Amazon or Google or Microsoft, everybody's trying to figure out how to digitize all the industrial sectors, and I think we don't necessarily have the right talent". A separate interactive presentation was sent by e-mail.

That includes everything from bike lanes to fast Internet and mobile phone connections to "recreational opportunities", according to Amazon's request for proposals.

Toronto Global's bid also includes potential sites in Durham, York and Halton.

Khalil Rahal, the Executive Director of the Economic Development Corporation for Wayne County was on the call.

"It worked well with various portions of our staff to each have portions of the proposal so it wasn't overwhelming", Hill said.

Just because they offered certain things to Amazon, doesn't mean every company should get the same, Bartik said. "So, we've got a great relationship going with them already".

"For centuries, Newark led this nation in innovation, in invention, and in industry as one of America's premier cities", said Booker, who served as the city's mayor from 2006 to 2013.

"Plus, we received some national exposure, particularly the Forbes magazine article ranking us in the top 14".

"That's what Amazon is looking for, the biggest financial break they can get; if they can essentially build a facility where the costs are offset by the financial incentive and generate a whole lot of jobs, that's a good thing, wherever they go", he added. And while the city is not offering Amazon much in terms of tax breaks, it is offering a 100-acre area not far from downtown Toronto.
