Federal Prosecutors Announce Plans to Retry Senator Menendez

Bob Menendez and a Florida ophthalmologist on corruption charges in New Jersey federal court after a deadlocked jury led to a mistrial last fall.

"Sen. Menendez and Dr. Melgen were indicted in the District of New Jersey on charges that included conspiracy, bribery, and honest services fraud", the department said. "An early retrial date is in the best interests of the public, and the United States is available to schedule a retrial at the Court's earliest convenience".

The Justice Department said it plans to re-try Sen. The retrial could also allow national Democrats to finally move away from Menendez now that New Jersey has a Democratic governor.

Douglas admitted to using "colorful language", in front of Braudy, but said, "none of it was directed at her". She claimed the manner in which he did so was "part of the problem, as is his pretext of victimisation".

Prosecutors accuse Menendez of exchanging political favors for bribes, including luxury hotel rooms, rides on a private jet, and more than $600,000 in political contributions from Melgen.

Mr. Menendez's office did not immediately respond to request for comment.

After the first jury deadlocked in the case, one of the jurors told The Washington Post that the government didn't have enough evidence to support its charges. Both Menendez and co-defendant Salomon Melgen are Hispanic.

November's mistrial was a serious blow to the Justice Department, which has investigated Menendez for almost five years.

"Anyone who watched the testimony, reviewed the exhibits, and spoke to the jurors and the alternates in the first trial knows that this prosecution was ridiculous and should never have been brought", Ogrosky added.

Menendez and Melgen, his longtime friend, were charged in 2015 with a bribery scheme in which Menendez allegedly traded political favours for gifts and campaign donations.
