The recall stems from the batteries overheating and reportedly creating fire and burn hazards. HP has set up a webpage, www.HP.com/go/batteryprogram2018, where customers can check to see whether their battery is included in the recall. The batteries were also sold as accessories or replacement batteries for the HP ZBook Studio G4 mobile workstation.

The batteries were sold from December 2015 through December 2017 at Best Buy, Amazon.com, Hp.com and other stores and authorized dealers nationwide. That might sound like a small percentage, but given how many devices HP shifts in a year, it's still likely to be a fairly substantial figure.

Since HP was unable to isolate the defective batteries to just the USA or neighboring country Canada, the company has opted to make this a global recall, though it has identified that the recall affects batteries "sold worldwide from December 2015 through December 2017".

Some of the affected models are HP Probook 64x (G2 and G3), HP ProBook 65x (G2 and G3), HP x360 310 G2, HP ENVY m6, HP Pavilion x360, and HP 11 notebooks.

The computer company received eight reports of battery packs overheating, melting or charring, including three reports of property damage totaling $4,500. In each case, the batteries could have been sold as part of the notebooks, or as replacements.

The number of people testing positive for influenza also is significantly higher than in past years across the state and nation. The flu shot used the same components as as Australia's vaccine during their flu season that ended in August.

HP says, "Many of these batteries are internal to the system, which means they are not customer replaceable".

To check whether a battery is affected, HP owners will need to download HP's battery validation utility, which runs the check in about 30 seconds. "If the validation process identifies a battery as being eligible for replacement, the BIOS update should be applied and the system should be rebooted", said the firm.

'We are taking immediate action to address this issue including a voluntary recall and replacement of the batteries. While in "Battery Safety Mode", the laptops can still function safely while connected to an HP power adaptor. When enabled, Battery Safety Mode will discharge the battery and disable charging until the battery is replaced.
