Road accident on Delhi-Chandigarh highway kills four powerlifting players

Powerlifting gold medallist Saksham Yadav, 24, and four others died on Sunday after his sedan crashed into a divider and then an electric pole on a highway that leads to a popular breakfast destination after a night of partying in Delhi.

The four lifters - Tikamchand, Saurabh, Yogesh and Harish Roy - were rushed to the Raja Harishchandra Hospital, but were declared "dead on arrival".

The injured players include powerlifting world champion Saksham Yadav and another player identified as Bali.

Doctor said that he died at 6:38 pm of a cardiac arrest.

Locals informed police officials that the auto was being driven at a very high speed and the driver lost control when he was trying to overtake another vehicle and rammed into a roadside pole due to which it overturned. "They were celebrating Rohit's birthday on Saturday and had gone to Karnal (in Haryana)", the officer said.

The mishap took place at around 4 am when the sportsmen were returning to Delhi in their Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire auto after attending an athletic meet in Panipat.
