"I was under stress from a full year of attacks by two Miss Americas, and while I don't ever want to offer an excuse, I do want to offer context", says Haskell. "At the Board's request, Ms. Weidner has agreed to remain on the Board for up to ninety days to facilitate a smooth transition for the MAO to new leadership".

Leaked emails show Haskell allowed or participated in discussions of former pageant winners where their sex lives and weight were derided; 2013 Miss America victor Mallory Hagan (pictured above, at the 2013 GLAAD Awards) received the lion's share of criticism.

Josh Randle, president and COO of the Miss America organization, has also resigned "in light of recent events and new developments", a Miss America Organization spokesperson said.

Miss America announced on Friday that they would suspend Haskell pending an investigation into the emails where he joked about contestant's being "c-ts" and called women "huge" and "gross".

The emails included one that used a vulgar term for female genitalia to refer to past Miss America winners, one that wished that a particular former Miss America had died, and others that speculated about how many sex partners another former Miss America has had.

Randle's resignation comes amid a storm of controversy surrounding the Miss America Organization less than 48 hours after HuffPost published a story revealing that emails, mostly sent by Miss America Organization CEO Sam Haskell, contained misogynistic language, slut shaming and fat shaming.

In a statement, the organisation said it would be conducting "an in-depth investigation into alleged inappropriate communications [by Mr Haskell]".

Miss America 2013 Mallory Hagan, who turned 29 Saturday, was a subject of some of the worst of the emails between Haskell and other members of the organization.

"He (Angeli) is the one who has done Sam's dirty work for a long time", said Hagan.
