Apple admits to slowing older iPhones over battery issues

But some owners prefer faster performance instead.

Older batteries can cause iPhones to shut down without warning, so to prevent that, the company reportedly said it has created software that manages batteries as they age.

The situation is prickly: More than 10 years after Apple introduced its first iPhone, the company says it's trying to deliver the "best experience" to customers by preventing unexpected power-related shutdowns.

"We've now extended that feature to iPhone 7 with iOS 11.2, and plan to add support for other products in the future", said the company in the statement.

But the updates can also lead to disappointing speeds.

The sudden shutdown problem became widespread among iPhones in late 2016, forcing Apple to issue a software fix that had the net result of slowing the phone somewhat with an old, cold or low-charged battery, the company said.

"(But) it's a trade-off.

Apple has now admitted that the slowing of the phone's central processing unit (CPU) does take place, although not to force consumers to upgrade their devices.

Prof Subodh added that a typical lithium-ion battery is rated up to a thousand charging cycles, which averages to a battery life of about three years if a phone is charged once a day. She was referring to the traditional Apple reticence to share such software information. Now that the proof is here, it would serve Apple to be more forthcoming as to what these updates do to their phones.

Because of this decision, users who had no idea what was going on would believe that their old iPhone is slowing down due to possible age issues.

"It's not right", he said, referring to Apple's throttling of the processor. But it's largely shrugged off with smartphones - it doesn't help that the battery is not user replaceable.

That post triggered responses in which other Apple customers wondered whether the battery ploy was also to blame for their older Macbook laptops not working as well as they once had.
