The United States on Monday vetoed a resolution supported by the 14 other U.N. Security Council members that would have required President Donald Trump to rescind his declaration of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, a vote that showed the depth of global opposition to the USA move.

Trump said his decision is a "recognition of reality" that Jerusalem is not only the historic capital of the Jewish people but also the capital of modern Israel.

The draft resolution was backed on Monday by the 14 other Security Council members, including many U.S. allies, highlighting Washington's increasing isolation over an issue that has triggered mass rallies in support of the Palestinians in major worldwide cities.

A spokesman for the Palestinian president, Mahmoud Abbas, responded to the veto by saying it was "unacceptable and threatens the stability of the global community because it disrespects it".

The Egypt-sponsored resolution, which avoided naming the United States or Trump directly, sought to express "deep regret at recent decisions concerning the status of Jerusalem" and asked other countries not to follow suit and move their embassies to a city considered holy by Jews, Christians and Muslims.

The Palestinians want East Jerusalem as the capital of an independent state.

"We will not accept the U.S.as a mediator in the peace process and this American position must be met with several measures", he said, highlighting that a special committee will be formed to look into relevant United Nations resolutions and propose new ones.
