Somalia: Suicide bomber hits Mogadishu police academy

A suicide bomber has killed at least 13 police officers during a parade at a training centre in the Somali capital, Mogadishu.

Somalia is one of the most unsafe countries for journalists: 45 Somali reporters were killed between 2007 and 2015, according to the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).

At the time, it described the dead as "enemy combatants" and that they were members of al Shabaab, the al-Qaeda linked insurgent group.

The security chiefs said the circumstances under which the suicide bomber infiltrated the heavily guarded police academy remain unclear. Al-Shabaab carries out frequent bombings in Mogadishu and other towns.

"We can confirm that at least 17 people were killed and 17 others wounded after a suicide attack targeted General Kahiye Police Academy", Abdullahi Hamid, state minister for the office of the prime minister, told local media.

"A man wearing an explosive vest entered the camp disguised as a policeman, and blew himself up", police officer Mohamed Abdulle said.

Al-Shabab has converted itself into the deadliest Islamic extremist group in the African continent.

A 22,000-strong African Union force (Amisom) is in Somalia trying to help the government recapture territory from militants.
