Lebanese security forces on Sunday fired tear gas and water cannon at demonstrators attempting to march on the USA embassy in Beirut in protest at President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

United States officials said Mr Trump's decision on Wednesday last week to move the USA embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem will take at least two years to be implemented.

Protesters burnt tyres, American and Israeli flags and an effigy of Mr Trump in front of a barricade that had been erected by police about a kilometre away from the U.S. embassy itself.

Security forces cut off all roads leading to the embassy in northern Beirut to prevent protesters from reaching the mission.
