Amazon launches Prime service in Singapore five months after entering Asia

The Prime membership will entitle the customers of Singapore to have access to more than five million products listed on Amazon's site in the United States

Amazon launches Prime membership in Singapore amid SE Asia push; stops free shipping option

Amazon Prime in Singapore will be available for S$8.99 per month and for a limited time, customers can sign up for S$2.99 per month.

The local Prime membership benefits do not apply to items bought on Amazon websites in other countries, however, and customers with existing US Prime memberships can not convert them to local ones. While subscribers will get access to same day deliveries via Prime Now, it will only apply to some 5 million items from the global selection, compared to over 50 million in the United States, with free shipping if they spend S$60 ($45).

Amazon.com today launched its subscription-based Prime service in Singapore that provides access to fast shipping, streaming and gaming, intensifying competition with incumbent rival Alibaba-backed Lazada in Southeast Asia.

In July, the retailer added a two-hour delivery service in Southeast Asia as it is putting more effort into a market that could be very profitable for it.

So long as orders are $60 or more, Singapore Prime subscribers will be able to order a choice from over 5 million items shipped from Amazon US.

However, he encouraged "anyone living in Singapore to leverage the Prime membership package developed specifically for Singapore" and noted that Prime membership is country-specific and not transferable, which means that those with US Prime memberships can not convert them to local ones.

Mr Ghani noted that Singapore customers are "hyper-connected and mobile-first" but declined to comment on whether a local Amazon online store is forthcoming.

Amazon has just extended its e-commerce tendrils even deeper into the Singapore market.
