That's a relief after an intense few months of destructive storms. Harvey was the first major storm to hit the USA since Wilma hit Florida in October of 2005.

The three major hurricanes that made landfall were Harvey in Texas, Irma in the Caribbean and southeastern US, and Maria in the Caribbean and Puerto Rico. Meanwhile, unmanned aircraft and underwater drones probed Hurricane Maria's eyewall, soared at 60,000 feet over Hurricane Harvey and dove through the storm-churned waters of the tropical Atlantic and Caribbean to gather unique insights on the storms.

The 2017 hurricane season comes to a mericiful end on Thursday and the Lowcountry saw its fair share of activity.

The season really heated up toward late August as major category 4 hurricane Harvey made multiple landfalls along the TX/LA coasts. Tropical Storm Cindy, Tropical Storm Don and Hurricane Franklin were next and brought heavy wind and rainfall but no catastrophic damage.

All told, Bloomberg News reported that 2017's storms comprised the most expensive US hurricane season on record, producing an estimated $202.6 billion in damages.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is expected to release a cost assessment later this year that includes total costs for these three hurricanes. On that day, Irma was a Category 5 hurricane, Jose was a Category 4 hurricane, and Katia was a Category 2 hurricane. The 2017 season had the most named storms and hurricanes since 2005 when 28 named storms developed, and 15 of them became hurricanes.
