Govt 'committed to protecting rights of women'

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women is being celebrated worldwide today (Saturday) as the global social media campaign #metoo continues to gain momentum.

Penney Andrews, program manager for Tranquility House, said, "As of November 25, and for the next 16 days, we will incite individuals to take action towards eliminating violence against women".

"Girls are left more vulnerable in situations of violence and exploitation when their views are overlooked".

The US President took to twitter to say that the magazine had told him the would "probably" be selected as Person of the Year . TIME itself commented on the president's tweet to say that he was incorrect about their editorial process.

"While our society has made great advances towards recognizing women's rights and achieving gender equality, we can not stop until we have put an end to gender-based violence once and for all". The data was compiled from 2005 to 2016 and included 87 countries.

Nearly half of the women who were killed in 2012 were killed by either partners or family members, compared to 6% of men.

The groups recommend five steps health care workers can take respond to and help prevent violence against women. This evidence, however, doesn't improve the actions for women's inclusion, leadership and protection.

A civil society activist, Nargis, said efforts made for elimination of violence against women during the past one decade had produced no considerable results. Together we can ensure that women and girls everywhere can live free of violence.

Though the #metoo campaign has brought to light the stories of hundreds of women around the world who have been sexually assaulted, the figures published by the United Nations in honor of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women reveal that not hundreds but millions of women have endured some form of sexual violence in their lifetime. Fourteen women died, while ten women and four men were injured.

"Women around the country should be aware that they are sufficiently protected by the law", Legarda said.
