"High-quality fake currency contributes to the rise of terrorism", Singh said here after inaugurating the new headquarters of the National Investigation Agency (NIA).

Addressing the young officers/jawans, Singh said that terrorism was a major threat in many countries today but Prime Minister Narendra Modi had taken up the topic on the world stage and "succeeded" in bringing most countries on board the issue. Union home minister Rajnath Singh said on Tuesday that the "morale of terror groups as well as separatists has been hit hard ever since the crackdown against the flow of funds from neighbouring countries was launched".

The NIA had lodged a case in June over terror funding and has so far arrested 10 people in the case.

The Home Minister also hailed the NIA's role in curbing the menace of fake currency which acted as oxygen for "militancy". He said the NIA had filed chargesheets in 28 cases with a success rate of 85 per cent and a conviction rate of over 90 per cent. Kumar said: "In the last two years, the agency has registered 21 cases relating to ISIS and we have remained successful in terms of investigation". Ahead of his address, the agency chief Sharad Kumar said a total of 166 cases from 26 states and union territories were assigned to the NIA over the past 8 years - since its inception after the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.

Describing terrorism as a hurdle to development, he said the NDA government had taken several steps to tackle the problem, including highlighting the issue in global forums.
