In addition to McFadden's seventh straight Chicago Marathon win - eighth overall - in a course-record time of 1:39:15, an American won the men's marathon for the first time since 2002.

Last year's champion Abel Kirui of Kenya finished second. Joan Benoit Samuelson held the previous fastest American woman in Chicago (2:21:21) from October 20, 1985 until Sunday.

In 2016, he came in 3rd out of 1,158 finishers at the Fitzgerald's Lager Run, a five-kilometer (3.1-mile) race in Glen Ridge, with a time of 16:34. Investigators trying to establish the motive for the attack have had little more to chase than hints and shadows. Lombardo said he didn't know what Paddock intended with the explosives and wouldn't elaborate on getaway plans.

Through 5K in the men's race, there were 26 runners in a lead pack, headed by American Aaron Braun, with all the favourites content on the slow pace, which continued through 10K, projected for a 2:12:30 finish.

Florence Kiplagat's 10km time of 32:28 was also 19 seconds faster than Radcliffe's record split but by 15km it was Hasay, third this year in Boston, leading in 49:02, three seconds under record pace.

Jordan Hasay finished third in 2:20:57 and became the fastest American woman in the Chicago Marathon history. Stanley Biwott, a 2:03:51 marathoner and victor of New York City in 2015, dropped out shortly after.
