Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny jailed for 20 days over anti-Putin protest

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny attends a hearing after he was detained by police as he left his Moscow home on Friday to take part in a pre-election rally in Nizhny Novgorod, at a court in Moscow, Russia October 2, 2017. Russian Federation votes in March in a curious election: Incumbent Vladimir Putin is yet to confirm he will seek another term, while Navalny says he intends to compete although his recent jail sentences mean that officially he is ineligible. Previously, Navalny was sentenced to 15 days in prison for a protest on March 26th, also marked by hundreds of arrests.

Notably, the 20-day jail sentence is long enough to force Navalny to miss a major rally he scheduled for Saturday.
