ICE Cracks Down on Sanctuary Cities — Arrests Nearly 500 on Immigration Charges

Washington, Sep 29 (Prensa Latina) U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials have arrested 498 undocumented immigrants in a four-day operation in sanctuary city jurisdictions, which shield illegal aliens from deportation. ICE reports that 33 of those arrests occurred in Portland. OR is one of those jurisdictions.

In the wake of federal immigration raids targeting "Sanctuary Cities", Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker said he thinks the USA government should focus on arresting risky criminals who are here illegally, not those whose only offense was illegal immigration.

ICE says Operation Safe City targeted people who'd violated immigration laws and prioritized people with convictions or pending charges, known gang members, and immigration fugitives.

ICE acting Director Tom Homan said local policies of non-cooperation create magnets for illegal immigration, forcing the agency to use more resources in those communities.

Among those taken into custody in this week's operation, 317 had criminal convictions, including 86 for driving under the influence, the most of any listed offense.
