Two large rockfalls at El Capitan in Yosemite National Park left a man dead and two other people hurt, but this natural phenomenon is not all that uncommon.
The couple, who were found with climbing equipment, are thought to have been scouting the ascent from a trail when a sheet of granite around 40 metres by 20 metres (131ft by 65ft) fell from a height of around 200 metres 650ft. This comes after the park cleans up debris from El Capitan's rockfalls. "Which is why you end up getting repeated rockfall from the same area once it gets started", said DeGraff.
The rockfall on Thursday, September 28 was substantially larger than Wednesday's series of rockfalls that occured in the same area on El Capitan.
Experts have assured the public there is no more danger of another giant rock fall.
