Aswegan tells PEOPLE that officers were first called to Macke's home on September 21 after receiving a report from the father of two of Macke's children that she had left the day before for a 12-day vacation in Germany. Instead of cancelling her trip, the mother left her two 12-year-olds in charge of her other 7- and 6-year-old children.
Police said the day before they were called, the 30-year-old mother had left the country to go to Germany and wasn't expected to come back until October 1.
Macke made no arrangements for supervision of the children while she was away, according to police.
Police said they have never experienced something like this before.
