A volcano on the popular tourist island of Bali could erupt for the first time in decades.
National Disaster Mitigation Agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho has praised the welcoming response of local communities on Bali to the evacuees. According to the monitoring agency BPVMG, hundreds of shallow earthquakes are detected each day at the volcano, suggesting that a new batch of magma has moved to within a few kilometers beneath the summit.
More than 35,000 people have been evacuated and a travel warning has been issued, with any eruption set to disrupt flights to and from the island.
"In addition to the handling of refugees, the current priority programs are socialization and education for disaster risk reduction and preparedness", the National Disaster Mitigation Agency wrote.
