"For the first time in 300 years, there's not a single living person on the island of Barbuda". Barbuda, the sister island of Antigua is located 28 miles to the north.

World renowned for its pink sand beaches many miles long, Barbuda was listed in 2016 by Conde Nast Traveller as one of the top ten destinations to watch.

"Barbuda has some of the most lovely beaches in the world incidentally and it's crystal clear water with pink sand beaches".

With 95 percent of the structures on the tiny island of Barbuda destroyed, all 1,800 residents have been evacuated, leaving it uninhabited for the first time in 300 years.

All 1800 residents living on Barbuda were forced to evacuate in the wake of Hurricane Irma, a 608-kilometre wide storm that smashed almost every structure on the island, which is only 160 square kilometres.

"We've had most of the people we've brought over to Antigua in shelters".

"This was a huge monster", he told USA Today. "The island and the people on the island had absolutely no chance". The cost of reconstruction has been estimated to be in the region of $200 million and would likely take several years to complete.

That's an astronomical sum for a country with a gross domestic product of about $1 billion.

He said: "I have to tell you that we definitely can not afford it from domestic resources.We are hoping that friendly governments and global partners will step up to the plate and assist us..." PRI quoted Browne as saying the result of the storm is a "national disaster of epic proportions" and that Barbuda needs outside help.

The ambassador didn't mince words when it came to calling for help from the worldwide community, laying some of the blame for the island's predicament at the world's feet.
