But those inside say they were pleased the education secretary chose them for a visit.

The Department of Education says one goal of DeVos' tour is highlighting "unique" ways around the county that schools and teachers are "meeting the needs" of students.

DeVos' initial panel with a group of 21st Century students included several that aspire to earn associate degrees while still in high school.

DeVos' visit was met with dozens of demonstrators.

We are talking this week about rethinking schools because the way that we've done school for over 100 years is essentially the same. Yet, at the same time, Congress seems to have no plans to enact the stronger support for neighborhood public schools parents prefer.

Sec. DeVos reads to Kindergarten students at St. Mary's Catholic School in Lincoln. Superintendent Cheryl Pruitt and school board president Rosie Washington were also present for her visit. She will end the tour at Eastern Hancock High School for its football game and pig roast from 6:10 p.m.to 8:30 p.m.

Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos has spent parts of two days in Nebraska, visiting a variety of schools.
