United Kingdom pre-owned media chain CEX, known both for its role in the United Kingdom second-hand market and the fact its name is pronounced "sex", has apparently fallen victim to a large scale online data security data breach.

It is working with authorities, including the police, to investigate, it says. The store also sells smartphones and PCs.

"This includes personal information, and, for a small number of customers, it also includes encrypted data from expired credit or debit cards".

Personal data stolen by hackers include customer names, addresses, email addresses, phone numbers and some credit card information.

According to a statement released by Cex, the information stolen appears to relate exclusively to the online store, with in-store data not appearing to be compromised.

In an email to those it believed may have been affected, CEX managing director, David Mullins, has attempted to calm anxious customers, saying that, 'We want to reiterate that any payment card information that has been taken was encrypted and has long since expired. Customers that use the same password across other websites and services should change their passwords as well.

"We take the protection of customer data extremely seriously and have always had a robust security programme in place which we continually reviewed and updated to meet the latest online threats", CeX added.

"It's surprising that Cex still stored customer card details prior to 2009", said Javvad Malik from security firm AlienVault.

Cex has urged customers to change their password, especially if they reuse it for other websites. "We ceased storing customer card details in 2009".
