South Africa President Jacob Zuma on Tuesday narrowly survived a parliamentary vote of no confidence, as the motion has been defeated, with 177 votes supporting and 198 votes against it.

The ruling party said the DA's move "exposes what the ANC has always stated, that the motion of no-confidence in President Zuma is not about the President but an attempt at regime change through parliament".

Zuma is attacking what he calls "propaganda through the media that the ANC is no longer supported by the people".

"This confirms the correctness of the ANC in voting against yesterday's motion", the office of ANC chief whip Jackson Mthembu said.

After nearly two hours of speeches, members of parliament voted in the secret ballot on the floor of the South African Parliament.

Zuma's political controversies have drawn attention away from South Africa's pressing long-term economic challenges.

The party, which has ruled South Africa since the end of apartheid in 1994, is deeply divided and several ANC lawmakers have voiced criticism of the veteran leader.

Zuma's term continues until elections in 2019.

If the no-confidence motion succeeds, Zuma will have to resign immediately.

Global ratings agency, Standard and Poor's said on Tuesday that the outcome of the vote of confidence in favour of Zuma will not impact the country's downgrade-threatened credit rating.

He also noted that some ANC MPs were absent without tendering an apology.

Mr Zuma's critics have been calling for a secret ballot in the hope it will embolden MPs from his African National Congress (ANC) party to support his removal by shielding them from pressure.

"My conscience is that we need to respect the voters that brought us here", she said.

The ANC has 249 seats in the 400-seat parliament and the opposition controls 151, so it would take 50 ANC lawmakers backing the opposition to vote Zuma and his cabinet out.

The Opposition accuses Mr Zuma of corruption and mismanagement, but the embattled leader celebrated his victory and thanked his supporters.
