NOAA updates Atlantic hurricane forecast -- now expects up to 19 named storms

Vertical wind shear is weak in the Tropical Atlantic and Carribean Sea region.

The NHC said development of this system is not expected during the next few days due to unfavorable environmental conditions, but some development is possible this weekend while the system moves generally west-northwestward at about 15 miles per hour over the western Atlantic. We've already seen a boost in activity in the first nine weeks of this season with six named storms already. Peak hurricane season runs from mid-August through October.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami upgraded the storm to a hurricane late Wednesday afternoon. The amount of predicted named storms was increased to 14-19. But now that the predictions have shifted towards neutral conditions, it has affected the Atlantic hurricane season thus increasing the likelihood of storms.

These six make up "half the number of storms during an average six-month season and double the number of storms that would typically form by early August", said the U.S. government agency in a statement.
