A suicide bomb attack in Afghanistan on Wednesday killed two American troops as they were traveling in a convoy near the airport in the southern city of Kandahar, the US military said, in a strike claimed by the Taliban insurgency.

Gereshk district has been a centre of fighting between Taliban and Afghan security forces for several weeks.

"Our prayers today are with the nearly 900 Georgian soldiers in Afghanistan who are mourning their fallen comrade", said U.S. Army Gen. John Nicholson, commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, known as the Resolute Support Mission.

"I can confirm that two US service members were killed in action in Kandahar, Afghanistan, when their convoy came under attack", Pentagon spokesman Capt. Jeff Davis said Wednesday.
