The USAF Bargain-Shopped Undelivered Jets From Russia For Air Force One

Bankrupted Russian firm s jets may become Air Force One

Bankrupted Russian firm's jets may become Air Force One

Although the US Air Force (USAF) has made a decision to go ahead with its plans of buying two new aircraft to replace the current presidential transport, it still found a way to cut the cost of the $386.8 million price tag for each of the two 747s.

The planes had initially been ordered in 2013 by Russian airline Transaero but the firm went bust in 2015.

But the planes are going to cost quite a bit more than your average Boeing 747-8 - which has a sticker price of $386.8 million - since the USA military will need to outfit it with specific protections and capabilities for the President's use and protection. Boeing regularly sells a plane of the same kind for $390 million.

The 747s now flown as Air Force One are 747-200s, older models that started flying presidents in the early 1990s.

Thank you for signing up.

Key trial of last year's coup attempt begins in Ankara
Nearly 500 people arrested after last year's failed coup in Turkey have appeared in court accused of taking part in the plot. The key suspect is Fethullah Gulen , a US -based cleric, who is accused by Ankara of being behind the coup attempt.

The Boeing 747 jets are part of a deal the Air Force is finalizing, which the Pentagon may announce as soon as this week, defense officials told Defense One. Boeing built two of the four jets in the order, but the airline never took ownership of them.

The oldest plane in the current fleet dates back to 1990.

Air Force One has more than 4,000 square feet of floor space on three levels, including a presidential suite, a medical suite that can serve as an operating room and galleys capable of feeding as many as 100 people at a time.

First lady Melania Trump and President Donald Trump wave from the top of the stairway leading to Air Force One during a trip to Brussels in May.

According to a report by the Government Accountability Office published last March, the Presidential Aircraft Recapitalization program has an estimated total cost of $3.21 billion spread out over the next decade or so.

Trump, GOP senators to unveil revised bill cutting legal immigration
On Wednesday afternoon, Donald Trump unveiled controversial legislation aimed at reducing legal immigration in the United States. The potentially controversial legislation would dramatically tilt American immigration law towards a more merit-based system.

"This deal is focused on providing a great value for the Air Force and the best price for the taxpayer", a Boeing spokesman said.

That modification, done to specifications set by the Air Force, Secret Service and the White House Military Office, is where numerous costs related to the new Air Force One and its backup will come into play. Bearing the famous designation 'Air Force One', the planes have become well known due to their distinctive white-and-blue livery. But later that year, the airline went bankrupt and was unable to pay for the planes. Sounds like a good deal to me.

Sirimanne said he thinks it's unlikely the Air Force would have paid more than $200 million for each plane.

The planes are expected to enter service between 2018 and 2022.
