Toyota set to sell long-range, fast-charging electric cars in 2022: paper

Toyota isn't saying yet where its batteries will end up, but any edge here is bound to be a big boon for automakers looking at a future that increasingly seems like it'll be dominated by EVs.

Toyota will launch a long-range electric vehicle that will be able to recharge in just a few minutes in 2022, reports Reuters, citing the Japanese newspaper Chunichi Shimbun.

Massachusetts' Highest Court Blocks Immigration Detainers
The SJC did not agree with the assertions of the DOJ and stated that the state police may only make arrests for criminal offenses. The justices ruled in a case involving court officers, the white-shirted men and women who provide security in courtrooms.

According to a Chinese daily called Chunichi Shimbun, the new platform will be powered by solid state batteries that will provide significantly faster charging time and longer ranges. The lack of acids in such batteries is expected to bring their manufacturing costs down considerably once the technology is ramped up to production levels, also eliminating the need for the environmentally unfriendly manufacture of lithium-ion batteries.

A Toyota spokesperson told Reuters the company is aiming to commercialize the new batteries by the early 2020s. The newspaper reports that other automakers are also developing solid-state batteries for next-generation electric cars.

Arab governments deem terrorists to those linked with Qatar
Notably, Erdogan's Gulf tour, by the first head of state of a non-Gulf nation, came after the visits to the region by U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, and foreign ministers of Britain, France and Germany in the past weeks.

Solid-state batteries are thought to be a lot safer than common li-ion cells and could have more potential for higher energy density, but we have yet to see a company capable of producing it in large-scale and at an attractive price point competitive with li-ion. The downside is that they're still very expensive to manufacture on a mass scale. Electric vehicles now use lithium-ion batteries, so it will be interesting to see if Toyota manages to push all-solid-state batteries to mainstream production.

So despite the world thinking Toyota weren't interested in EVs, they were busy beavering away on the batter technology.
